Super League: Wakefield run 10 tries past Bradford, as Warrington miss out on going joint-top after Catalans defeat

Tom Johnstone and Olivier Pratt both scored hat-tricks as Wakefield swept past Bradford 52-12 at the DIY Kitchens Stadium to move up into second place in the Betfred Super League.

Trinity - edged out by Wigan in their Challenge Cup quarter-final last weekend - made a flying start when Johnstone touched down on the left wing inside two minutes.

The Bulls were opened up again in the seventh minute when Wakefield worked the ball across the line for Johnstone to score again, before he completed an impressive hat-trick with another try in the corner after 17 minutes.

Jack Sinfield thought he had darted over for another try after some quick footwork found a gap in the centre, but his score was ruled out for obstruction in the build-up.

Despite the chalked try, the hosts returned to ask questions of the under-pressure Bulls, with Josh Rourke picking out Cam Scott, before Sinfield converted the extras.

After Bradford saw Esan Marsters forced off with a leg injury, Rourke then burst clear to run in another try as Wakefield extended their lead to 24-0 heading into half-time.

The Bulls - who had lost three of their last four league games in a tough return to the top flight - regrouped after the break, with Zac Fulton latching on to Joe Mellor's grubber kick, before the second-row touched down. The try was initially not given by the referee, but following a video review, officials deemed the ball had been grounded and awarded the try.

Wakefield soon restored their advantage at 28-6 as Pratt touched down in the right corner. Sinfield booted the conversion before more quick passing put Seth Nikotemo over in the 52nd minute. It remained one-way traffic as another sweeping Wakefield passing move sent Pratt in down the right just after the hour.

Bradford dug in again to get another consolation try when Eliot Peposhi broke down the middle before Pratt completed his hat-trick down the right flank with 12 minutes left. Johnstone then got his fourth try of the afternoon after collecting a chip kick from Rourke, with Mike McMeeken seeing his late score ruled out after video review as Wakefield closed out a fifth straight league win.

Warrington Wolves missed out on going joint-top of the Super League table on Saturday afternoon after Sam Burgess' side suffered a 38-22 defeat to Catalans Dragons.

Former St Helens star Lewis Dodd stood out for the French team, scoring his first-ever Super League hat-trick as the rampant Dragons ran in five unanswered tries in the second half.

The victory came just four days after Catalans coach Joel Tomkins stepped down from his role due to personal reasons, with Ryan Sheridan taking charge on Saturday as the side's interim coach.

The Wolves started the better side and found themselves 16-10 up just after half-time thanks to Josh Thewlis' brace of tries, while centre George Williams followed up with the side's third.

But the French outfit quickly found their groove, coming from behind to secure an emphatic victory and leave the visitors stunned, as Tommy Makinson, Dodd, Guillermo Aispuro-Biche and Zac Lipowicz all crossed the whitewash in the second half.

It was only Warrington's second defeat of the season, with head coach Sam Burgess admitting his side looked a shade of their usual selves.

"That period itself wasn't where we lost it, but we didn't manage well after it," Burgess said.

"Although we were 10-0 up, we didn't quite look ourselves. We didn't have that same energy that we've been bringing.

"We've played eight or nine games now and these things do happen, so we need to reset and go again."
